The 6 Types of Visual Thinkers

Visual Thinking Types was created by the team at Sketch Group as a way to help people better understand how they think, and communicate, when ideas hit the page.

Over 14 years of training, consulting, and co-creating with organisations across Australia and beyond, we noticed something: people approach visual thinking in surprisingly different ways. Some draw to explore, others to explain. Some to simplify, others to align.

So we captured what we saw. What emerged were six distinct styles:

  • The Synthesiser – distills complexity into clarity
  • The Mapper – brings order to chaos through structure
  • The Doodler – explores ideas through spontaneous sketches
  • The Clarifier – sharpens understanding with precision visuals
  • The Connector – uses visuals to align and engage people
  • The Visionary – draws bold futures to inspire change

This tool isn’t about how “good” your drawings are. It’s about how you think, and how sketching can help you and your team communicate, collaborate, and create with more clarity.

We believe sketching is a business tool. This quiz is your first step to putting it to work.
